Vodafone Smart Platinum 7.

The best of Vodafone in a Phone.

Mid-Range Smartphones: Explained
Recently, We've been seeing a new trend in smartphones. Top of the end flagship specs is becoming more commonly found in cheaper alternatives also. These increasingly cheaper smartphones are often referred to as "Mid-Rangers" as they are much cheaper than flagship alternatives offered by Samsung and Apple. These smartphones have become particularly popular among people in emerging markets such as India and Africa. "Mid-Range" smartphone sometimes even shares the same specs with more expensive flagships such as processors and displays. Theses smartphone's aren't always perfects though as some suffer from bloatware, bad design, poor camera quality and a lack of software updates. The Vodafone Smart Platinum 7 is a perfect example of how your money goes a long way towards an excellent phone. You don't need to spend a fortune anymore for an excellent smartphone experience.
Picture
Design: 9/10
The Vodafone Smart Platinum 7 is an excellently crafted smartphone that incorporates high-quality aluminum sandwiched between two panels of tough Gorilla Glass. Glass covers the complete front and back of the phone creating a smooth, elegant feel. Beneath the glass lies a sharp, diamond-like pattern detail that when seen gives the phone an awesome look. This glass back is non-removable unlike other phone's from Vodafone and covers a huge 3000mAh battery. The aluminum side rails create a premium feel while using the phone and also manage to make the phone feel delicate and slippery. Chamfered edges show how the attention to detail pays off. These edges are shiny but are prone to scuffs and scratches over time.

This a Phablet smartphone so people with small hands may not like the sheer size of the phone. The 5.5in display creates this Phablet size but it manages to remain more compact than most smartphones with a display this size thanks in part to its thin bezels around the display. Even with a huge 3000mAh battery the Platinum 7 manages to remain slim at just 7mm. The phones weight is also nice as it is neither too heavy or light at just 155g. The Platinum 7 is relatively pocket-friendly also as its slim enough and the chamfered edges make it easy to grip but it does remain slippery. The phone charges via micro USB which can be found at the bottom right of the aluminum side rail.

Perhaps the best part of the Platinum 7 is its dual front-firing speakers (More on these later) that are housed at the top and bottom of the display. At the upper center at the back of the phone lies the 16MP camera that is accompanied by a flash. The camera isn't flush with the glass back and protrudes slightly which may lead to more scratching over time and rocking while typing on a flat surface. The selfie camera at the front is also accompanied by an LED flash which is a nice addition.

Vodafone also got the buttons right on the Platinum 7 as they are intelligently posited at the right upper side of the phone.  These include the sleep/wake button and the volume buttons. The same diamond cut pattern detail is found on the buttons which make them easily distinguishable from the rest of the phone. The upper left side of the phone also contains a button that has the diamond cut pattern detail. This button is very handy as it customizable so you can use it for things such as activating the camera with a double press. The Smart Platinum 7 even has a fingerprint sensor which isn't something you often find with smartphones at this price. The print sensor is located on the back of the device under the camera which is unlike most phones these days. The sensor is fast, reliable and even wakes the device when you touch your finger on it so you don't have to use the power button. Setting up the fingerprint sensor with your index finger is also fast and easy. There is only one problem with the sensor, that is, it is hard to distinguish the sensor when you're not looking at the back of the phone as there isn't really any texture or indentation.

Display: 9/10
Excellent smartphone displays have become ubiquitous today on flagship smartphones such as the Samsung Galaxy S7, LG G5 and HTC 10 ( Apple's flagship iPhone 6S display is far behind the competition as it is not even 720p). Mid-Range smartphones generally don't pack excellent displays as they usually vary from 720p to 1080p. A good display is crucial on a smartphone has it is the single most used component in a smartphone. Movies, games, and books all come to life on beautiful displays. A good smartphone display is a mixture of various characteristics such as vividness, clarity, toughness, brightness and viewing angles.

The Vodafone Smart Platinum 7 has a simply stunning display. It packs a gorgeous 5.5in 2K (1440 x 2560 pixels) that displays vivid colors and has excellent brightness. (Apple should be ashamed of themselves) The display uses AMOLED technology meaning colors will pop and blacks will be true black. AMOLED displays are also more efficient as they don't have to light up dark pixels thus saving power. The display also becomes very bright for outdoor use and very dim for bedtime use. The display is easily visible outdoors and even in bright sunlight. Using your phone at night will become easier as the bright display won't blind you. The display also has an always-on mode that works by picking up the phone and displaying time and notifications.

The Vodafone Smart Platinum 7 also has excellent viewing angles making it easier to share your phone with others. Tough Gorilla Glass protects the display from preventing scratching and shattering. Responsiveness isn't a problem either as the display was also able to keep up with my touch inputs. Vodafone has also bundled a display tuner in the settings so you can adjust the warmth and vividness of your display. Altogether the Vodafone Smart Platinum 7 has a ground-breaking display that is one of the best around beating flagship smartphones such as the iPhone 6S and Huawei P9.

Performance: 8/10
One of the main compromises with Mid-range smartphones is speed. Manufacturers choose to use older, less powerful, less efficient processors in order to keep the overall cost down. This then leads to major problems for the end user who has to suffer from slow app loading times, battery draining and even app crashing. It only gets worse over time as manufacturers continue to push new, exciting but CPU intensive features that bog down the phone even more. As you install more apps and download content such as movies and music the phone becomes completely unusable as the processor isn't able to keep up with you. Graphically intensive apps such as Asphalt 8 or Minecraft put so much stress on the phone that it will overheat causing more severe battery drain while throttling the CPU and GPU performance leaving you with game performance that is laggy and very annoying. Qualcomm, the most widely used chip manufacturer aims to change this as they have introduced various new chipsets that are both powerful and power efficient while managing to be cheap enough to be used in Mid-range smartphones. The Vodafone Smart Platinum 7 takes advantage of Qualcomm's new chip in order to boost both performance and battery life while managing to keep the cost down.

The Vodafone Smart Platinum 7 packs a powerful new Qualcomm Snapdragon 652 CPU and Adreno 510 GPU. The CPU is powered by eight individual cores also known as octa-core. The Snapdragon 652 uses Quad-core 1.8 GHz Cortex-A72 & quad-core 1.2 GHz Cortex-A53. The device scores highly in benchmarks as well and beats flagship chips such as the Snapdragon 808 and 810 of last year. It doesn't manage to beat Qualcomm's current most powerful processor, the Snapdragon 820 but for a phone this price, you get more than you pay for. The phone is well capable of handling tasks such as downloading apps, playing games like Minecraft, Asphalt 8, Temple Run 2, Subway Surfers and Plants vs Zombies 2. These graphically intensive apps ran just as well as they did on flagships like the Samsung Galaxy S7 with no lag or stutter. Social Media use is also perfect. The phone handled scrolling through Instagram, Twitter, Facebook and Snapchat without any problems. This phone is powerful enough most people and I find it hard to see the difference between this phone and flagships in day to day use.

The Platinum 7 is backed by 3GB of RAM so multitasking between apps is fast. Apps like Youtube did have to refresh more than I would have liked but for day to day use switching between apps is handles well by the Snapdragon 652. The phone also managed to remain cool while playing graphically intense games. Qualcomm has managed to fix the overheating issues that plagued Snapdragon 810 devices in the past. The processor also seems to be very efficient as it uses very little power in standby mode and throttling during intensive games isn't too intense to cripple the performance. ( More on battery performance later)

The Platinum 7 uses the latest wifi and Bluetooth antennas with Wifi 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac, dual-band and Bluetooth 4.2. The phone includes an FM Radio which is rarely seen on smartphones today. The phone comes bundled with 32GB of internal storage and is expandable via MicroSD up to 256GB and if you don't need the extra space you can use another sim as the phone is dual sim capable.

Altogether the Vodafone Smart Platinum performs well in almost every task and has the latest antenna technology while also being power efficient and remain cool in heavy use.

Camera: 7/10
Great cameras have become essential on smartphones as people use their cameras more and more to capture photos and videos on the go. As smartphone cameras have evolved over time and have become better and better with most now even better than compact digital cameras and some have even become close to DSLR quality photos and video. Smartphone camera technology has vastly improved over time. Manufacturers have improved cameras by offering cameras with Bigger sensors, more megapixels, larger apertures. All these improvements have improved camera quality and video quality. Photos have become clearer, brighter and more vivid while videos have become clearer, more stable and more vivid. However, Mid-range smartphones have suffered from poor camera quality as manufacturers use older camera technology which leads to a poor camera experience leaving you with grainy, unfocused photos and shaky, low-quality video. These cameras struggle the most in low-light and macro shots as the camera struggles to obtain a focus. Manufacturers use these older camera technologies in order to keep costs down.

The Vodafone Smart Platinum 7 uses a 16MP sensor with autofocus and an LED flash. The camera uses an aperture of f/2.0 and records video 2160p@30fps. The images produced are both high quality and colorful. The 16MP sensor manages to capture a large amount of detail and macro shots produced are also clear and vivid. The autofocus is fast and reliable. Low-light is less exciting as the images generally lacked color and contain too much noise. Video quality is also excellent as the camera obtains the focus fast and the digital image stabilization does a reasonable job of stabilizing the footage. HDR does an excellent job of including the foreground and background in the photo, The HDR is more aggressive than most smartphones around. The auto mode is reliable and adjusts the exposure to suit the shot.

The 'selfie' camera shoots 8MP photos and has an LED flash which is something you don't see on most smartphones these days. Photos produced are bright and skin reproduction is excellent. The camera also has a wide-angle lens which is very handy for group photos. The LED flash is a nice addition as it lights up your selfies in low light and is plenty bright. This selfie camera is capable of shooting video at 1080p which is plenty of resolution on a selfie camera.

The Camera Software is also one of the Smart  Platinum 7's strong points. The camera launches fast and the app is very responsive. There are plenty of modes to chose from. My favorite was the manual mode which allows you to change multiple settings of the camera from ISO, Aperture, Focal length and grid lines. The auto mode is probably the mode most people will use and it does all the work for you. The camera allows you to capture photos very fast the app design feels modern and intuitive. The app can be launched by simply double pressing the button on the upper left side of the phone. The camera software even has a night mode so capturing photos and videos in the dark produces better results.

Altogether the Vodafone Smart Platinum 7 has a simply stunning camera that produces clear, bright and colorful images and captures stable, high quality(2K) video. The selfie camera produces excellent images and has an LED flash. All this is backed by the easy to use and fast camera software that is bundled with various tricks such as a slow-motion video mode and night mode.
All the below images were captured on Vodafone Smart Platinum 7 using auto mode with default settings. These are original quality and have not been edited.
Software: 9/10
The software is a very subjective topic on every smartphone as everyone has different preferences. Some love clean, simple to use the software while others love powerful, productive software that is packed with many cool features. Manufacturers face many challenges when designing their own software as they have to strike a balance between simplicity and complexity. They have to cater to people so that everyone is happy. Unlike hardware, the software can be easily updated without having to purchase a new device. Mid-range smartphones have become infamous for included buggy, heavily skinned versions of Android that are unreliable and slow. The software is visually unpleasing and the manufacturer has included various unwanted apps and services that cannot be uninstalled causing your phone to slow down and use up memory over time. Features are poorly integrated into the OS and software updates are available very seldom if ever. Google's own version of Android found on Nexus devices show how Google originally intended the software to be and sets a standard for other manufacturers to realize this. The Vodafone Smart Platinum 7's software is more Nexus or 'Stock-Android' like than most other phones on the market.

The Vodafone Smart Platinum 7 comes pre-installed with the latest version of Android, 6.0.1 straight out of the box and is loaded with Vodafone's own custom UI. The software experience is very close to Stock-Android with only a few customizations such as lock screen quick launching toggles, Vodafone's own phone, text and security app and a battery/storage optimizer app. Every part of the OS from the smooth notification draw and quick toggles to the settings menu and camera are all streamlined by a clean, simple to use design. Even the wallpapers are sleek.

The software is also very fast, responsive and fluid. Opening apps, snapping photos, multi-tasking, playing music and surfing on the web was all very fast without any lag. The pre-installed Vodafone messaging app called Message+ which is Vodafone's own take on an SMS app. The app is fast and simple to use, however sometimes I wish the design was more streamlined to the rest of the UI but altogether the app is a nice addition and a powerful tool for anyone who uses SMS regularly. Vodafone has also added their phone app called Call+ which is similar to Message+ but instead, it handles calls. Vodafone has also added Vodafone Protect and Vodafone Boost. The protect app protects your phone from viruses and malware while also provided phone tracking features and a battery optimizer. The Boost app simply speeds up the OS by cleaning Cache, RAM and frees up storage space.

My favorite feature Vodafone has added is quick toggles on the lock-screen allowing you to get quick access to things such as the LED flash, camera, calculator, timer, google voice, Call+ and notes app. This is a very handy feature as it does not require you to unlock your device, you simply just have to push the icon you want up towards the top of the display and your desired action will be performed. As for software updates, we will have to see if the phone will get updated to Android Nougat. The device has already received one update security update since I unboxed it.

Altogether, The Vodafone Smart Platinum 7 has a clean, simple to use software experience that includes various handy features and performs well. The software experience is simply excellent.

Call and Data Quality: 10/10
What good a phone without a strong and reliable network to back it. Vodafone, being Ireland's largest and most widespread network in Ireland backs the Platinum 7. The Vodafone network has over 90% 4G LTE coverage in every county on the island. Vodafone has by far fastest and most-widespread 4G LTE network that trumps Ireland's second largest mobile provider, Three. Vodafone's 4G LTE is available virtually everywhere from the countryside to the city, Vodafone has your back and with 4G+ been currently rolled out across the country promising to bring even more speed and reliability, the Vodafone network is only going to improve. Vodafone also supports HD Voice which allows for crystal clear phone calls that eliminate background noise, something not found on their rival, Three.

The Vodafone Smart Platinum is able to take full advantage of Vodafone's HD Voice allowing for clearer calls, 90% 4G LTE coverage and the rapidly expanding 4G+ network. The Platinum 7 managed to receive excellent 4G LTE speeds on the Vodafone network. I received 4G LTE speeds of at least 25Mbps everywhere I went and 4G+ speeds that were near 100Mbps.

Altogether, Vodafone simply has Ireland's fastest, most-widespread and reliable 4G network.

Speaker Quality: 10/10
Once you listen to music or watch a video for the first time using this phone you will be blown away. The Vodafone Smart Platinum 7 features dual front-firing speakers that are simply amazing. They are the best speakers on any smartphone that I have ever used. The sound produced is loud while remaining clear with an excellent balance of bass and treble. The best part about these speakers is that they are intelligently positioned at the front of the phone so that sound is actually firing towards you rather than to the side or in front of you.

The speaker experience gets even better though as the speakers are backed by Waves Maxxaudio. This means that Waves have customized the sound experience by controlling MaxxBass, Treble, Stereo and Revive. The software allows you to choose between various different modes. You can choose from Music, Movie, and General. Each completely customizes the audio to give you the best sound quality to suit the media you are consuming. You can even choose the genre of music you are listening to such as pop, rock, jazz or hip-hop.
Picture
Battery Life: 9/10

The Vodafone Smart Platinum 7 is powered by a non-removable 3000mAh battery that is charged via micro USB. The device has an impressive screen-on time of around 4 hours 30 minutes. The Snapdragon 652 allows for Qualcomm Quick Charge 3.0 allowing the phone to rapidly charge from 0 to 50% in under 30 minutes.

Stand-by time on the platinum 7 was also impressive as I could leave the phone at 100% and wake up the next morning at 97%. The battery does drain much faster when playing graphically intense games or using the camera.

A battery saver mode is available if you are running out of juice and can give you some extra time by limiting CPU performance and restricting apps in the background.
Conclusion
After time using the Vodafone Smart Platinum 7 it becomes very clear that this is a premium smartphone. The amazing build quality to the fast performance and outstanding speakers, this is the Best of Vodafone in a Phone. With a price tag of €399.99, this phone is easily recommendable to anyone. The phone is almost flagship quality and in our opinion is better than Apple's flagship, iPhone 6S. Enhanced by clean, fast and simple software and exemplified by an excellent camera experience while lasting up to 2 days on a single charge and backed by the best 4G LTE network in Ireland, Vodafone has managed to deliver one of the best smartphones in 2016.  A smartphone that blurs the lines between a Mid-ranger and a Flagship

I give the Vodafone Smart Platinum 7 an amazing score of 8.0/10
